You’ve probably heard of adaptogens, might take them daily, or might just want to know what they are and why (it seems) everyone is talking about them, so...

WHAT IS AN ADAPTOGEN?

Adaptogens are a family of medicinal herbs, but not all medicinal herbs are adaptogens…

Adaptogenic herbs help your body adapt to stress, mainly by supporting the production of stress-related neurotransmitters and hormones. They’re sometimes called “modulating” because adaptogens can adapt to what the body needs most, increasing or decreasing the functions of a particular body system. Adaptogens can help you feel less stressed while increasing energy levels. There are some that are more energizing while others are more calming and balancing.

WHEN DO YOU USE ADAPTOGENS?

Adaptogens are used for several uses when stress is an underlying or primary issue. They’re incredibly helpful when stress has left you feeling mentally or physically fatigued. They can also support fertility, reproductive function, overall mood, and immune strength. Depending on the herb, some can also protect you from toxins, decrease inflammation, balance blood sugar, and improve circulation. They are truly magical!

WHAT ARE SOME ADAPTOGENS?

Ones that will give you a boost of energy include:

  • Ginseng - this herb has been respected in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for over 2,000 years. Consider it if you’re feeling tired, have fertility or libido issues, or experience immune deficiencies.

  • Codonopsis - use this for overall vitality and to boost your immune system.

  • Cordyceps - is a tonic mushroom good for immune support, as well as strengthening respiratory function. When used regularly it can make you less susceptible to infections, like bronchitis.

  • Rhodiola - along with improving energy, it also supports focus and vitality. It’s recommended to take alongside food because the scent and taste can make some nauseous.

Calming adaptogens include:

  • Ashwagandha - strengthens and nourishes nervous, thyroid, and adrenal function. It can also relieve anxiety and PTSD. A true modulating herb, it also boosts vitality.

  • Holy basil - alongside ashwagandha, holy basil is one of the best anti-inflammatory adaptogens. The herb balances stress, lowers blood sugar, and decreases inflammation and pain. It can ease grief and anxiety by shifting the psyche immediately upon taking.

  • Chaga- has immune supporting benefits and aids respiratory health.

MY FAVORITE ADAPTOGENS
  • MUD\WTR (my coffee replacement) contains chaga, cordyceps, and reishi (all stimulating and calming adaptogens)

  • I usually have ashwagandha at home and add it to some warm oat milk and cinnamon to make a yummy latte

  • Erewhon makes an Immunity Tonic packed with medicinal mushrooms (reishi, chaga) that makes me feel better anytime I’m sick

All of these adaptogens have a multitude of benefits and it’s recommended to take adaptogens for at least 3 months to really notice their benefits. Herbs are significantly safer than pharmaceuticals, and are better suited for self-care, as well as being holistic. Herbs can make your health journey easier, but any holistic practitioner will tell you that herbs work best alongside a healthy diet and lifestyle. Educate yourself on the power of herbs, and empower yourself to know what is best suited for your own body. What might work for one person may not work for you, but the beauty of herbs is that they are natural and generally safe.
